G.E.C.

The General Electric Company started trading in 1922 using the "Gecophone" brand, and this changed simply to G.E.C. in 1930. G.E.C. had a main manufacturing works in Coventry, and as well as radio receivers other apparatus with an electrical basis was also made there. The radio design centre was based at Wembley in North London. As the name General Electrical Company implies G.E.C. were involved in the manufacture of all kinds of equipment from radio receivers to power stations. For that reason the company was rather committee driven with many layers of management, and perhaps because of this G.E.C. are not known for many ground-breaking developments in valve radio history. Nonetheless G.E.C. produced some interesting receivers, and the pictures below indicate some of the sets that will be considered over the next few pages.
