Philips 141U

Pictured here is the model 141U from 1954. Costing £11.18.6 +pt, this set is notable in that it features a Perspex front to the  cabinet that lights up in a sunburst effect when the radio is on. This is the second (and last) of Philips receivers to incorporate this feature and it makes the receiver look quite distinctive, especially in subdued light. (The other model is the model 310A which was a table model in bakelite, I might upload a picture later in 2003), The 141U is designed to be portable, and incorporates a bakelite back and built-in carrying handle moulded onto the top. That said it is mains only, so Philips may have limited sales as other manufacturers were building sets of about the same size and price that could operate from mains or battery, for instance the Ultra R784 or R786. The bakelite back to the set incorporates a frame aerial, as can be seen in the picture right. Valve line-up was UCH42, UF41, UBC41, UL41, UY41.
