Murphy Radio Model U598 From 1962

Shown above is the U598, from the last year of valve radio production by Murphy.  It features reasonably modern styling for its time in fact, as it incorporates the "long low" look, (though that trend had been about for a year or two).  Internally one can see that new techniques as a result of the introduction of solid state components are evident.  The valves sit on a traditional metal chassis, but there lurking beneath the chassis is a PCB (printed circuit board), the way of the future (see picture below).  Of course it would only be a short while before valve sockets came to be mounted directly onto the PCB, as TV's were still reliant on valves at this time.  At twice the price of the U704 lower down the page, this set was something of a luxury compared retailing at £19.9.1. (+pt).  Valve line-up 10L14, 10C14, 10F18, 10LD12, 10P18, U381.
