Murphy Radio Model U198M From 1956

1956 sees Murphy continue chiefly with further developing the new receivers introduced in 1955 (namely the A242, A262 and A362). The A252 replaces A242, whilst A362 also becomes available as A362T with a trawler band replacing long wave. The U198H from 1954 also makes an appearance again, now designated U198M as it now has the front panel of the set sprayed white. This receiver is shown above, and is designed as a “second set” for the kitchen or bedroom, rather than as the main receiver of the home. Pictured below left is the rear of the set, where the effect of the severe heat build-up in the set is apparent. Not only was this a fire risk from the fibre back, but also as the back disintegrated it left the high voltage mains components unprotected from “curious fingers”.
